The Culture of Safety

Rob Ellis, WorkSafely.com:
“It’s difficult for me to talk about losing my son Dave because I’m a parent, I’m just an ordinary parent, I loved my son Dave.

How many people have ever had their mom or dad injured on a job, hands up? Take a look around.”

Jim Harding, team leader, safety, health & environment, HydroOne:
“On the top by the pole, belted in by spurs and the pole broke…. Probably when the cross arm hit took the blow and probably saved my life.”

Rob Ellis:
“It’s more than hanging banners up and putting posters up. The safety is important. It’s building relationships with people.”

Crystal Culbert, plant manager, Weston Bakeries:
“The worst thing to ever have to do is to tell someone’s family that you know, that employee got hurt at your facility and you know, you’ve got to take care of your people.”

Brian Rivest, night lead hand, packaging, Weston Bakeries:
“When I was 16 years old you were allowed to drive forklifts you just got on a forklift and you were a driver… absolutely no any training.”

Rob Ellis:
“You look into the hospital front door and there’s the head waiting for you and for me. The doctor says come quickly with me, I’ll take you to where your loved one is.”

Crystal Culbert:
“When you put you know, an investment in your people the costs of health and safety are high if you don’t do it right. So from a capital perspective it’s very expensive, but it’s very worth it.”

Rob Ellis:
“I think profit for the most part in safety cultures is a nasty word. But it shouldn’t be.”

Jim Harding:
“By Rob Ellis having his own blog, he’ll bring more people in. There will be more exposure and I think you’ll improve getting the message of safety out there.”

Rob Ellis:
“People are using their computers for seven or eight hours a day and they’re reading blogs. That’s the target we need to get to. So how do we get to that market? We need to blog.”

“It’s about respect. Good employers will look after you.”
